Zentangle in Motion

Not only is this my 20th blog post, but this is also the first video I've posted! I made this nearly a year ago, and I posted it on Facebook for my friends to enjoy. They're really the only ones who have seen it, so this is the first time it's been available to the Zentangle community at large! The video illustrates the process of creating a Zentangle, from pencil dots and string to inking and shading - and back again. Utilizing 974 photos, it took over 6 hours to produce! I hope you enjoy it!

Update 9/3/12:
After hearing about several people's struggles with getting this video to play on an iPad, I decided to upload it to Youtube so it would be more widely accessible. Here's a link:

    1. A fair amount of work - one thing that saved a lot of work was having a rotating clipboard. I taped the clipboard to the table, and then I could rotate the surface to turn my tile, and rotate it right back into position for the photo. Very handy!

    1. As long as I can tangle into the awesome sauce with my fork...or are we at a restaurant that discourages tangling with liquids left on the plate? Either way, thanks! :-)

  10. Super cool! The playback at the end reminded me of when I was in elementary school and they showed us movies on the old timey projectors (just dated myself, I know...), the best part was when they would play the movies backwards and we saw everything in reverse. :)
I teach high school art--would it be ok if I got a copy of this video to show my kids? We're going to be starting line next week and we always do a few days of Zengtangling. I think my kids would love watching your work!

    1. Nice! I think I would look forward to the rewind part, too - I wish I had had that experience!

I would love it if you used my video in your teaching! If I added a donate button to my blog, would you contribute a few bucks (it doesn't have to be much) in exchange for the video file?

    1. Thank you! I wanted to remind folks that it all starts with a blank tile, and that anything is possible when you take it one stroke at a time.

    1. Definitely worth it, and I did have a lot of fun with it! I had to solve some interesting problems to be able to make it all work, but that's what made it fun.

  19. Why can´t I see it :(
Is it because I have an Ipad?

    1. Probably - I just tested it on an iPad, and it did not show up. I think it may be that the video is run through Flash - which is not compatible with iPads and iPhones. Any computer should work just fine, though.

  22. Well, Zach, I'd also love to show your video to my classes and I'm happy to make a contribution to your site for the privilege. Maybe if you started a CZT account you'd find the funds pouring in. What do you think? I'm clicking on the DONATE button next. Thanks for sharing your creative spirit with us.

    1. Thank you so much! And thanks for sharing the video on your blog, as well! I had to translate it to English to see what you said - I love when I get to do that because the translator isn't very accurate and hilarity generally ensues. Anyway, I really appreciate it, and tangle on!

  29. A friend just told me about zentangle after seeing a little drawing I did (nothing to compare to yours!), and she directed me to a blog which in turn directed me to your video. I am in AWE of what you accomplished there. Your drawing was beautiful even before the shading, but after the shading it really came to life. My daughter and I are going to have a lot of fun learning this new style of drawing. Thanks so much for sharing your work!
